Algemene verschijning

Actief, compact, met korte lendenen en in alle onderdelen volkomen harmonieus, leeuwachtig voorkomen, trots met waardige houding. Vast stabiel lichaam. Staart goed over de rug gedragen. Moet altijd vrij kunnen bewegen en niet zoveel vacht hebben dat activiteit wordt belemmerd of ongemak wordt veroorzaakt bij heet weer. Een blauw-zwarte tong is karakteristiek.

Belangrijke verhoudingen

De afstand van de schoft tot de elleboog is gelijk aan de afstand van de elleboog tot de grond.

Gedrag en karakter

Rustig, goede waakhond. Onafhankelijk, trouw, maar afstandelijk.

Head

Hoofd Schedel – vlak en breed.
Stop – niet uitgesproken.
Aangezicht
Neus

groot en breed en in alle gevallen zwart, behalve in crème en bijna witte Chow Chows bij wie een lichter gekleurde neus acceptabel is, en een bijpassend gekleurde in de blauwe en fawns. Maar zwart heeft in alle gevallen de voorkeur.
Snuit

matig van lengte, breed vanaf de ogen tot het einde (niet spits toelopend als bij de vos). Goed opgevuld onder de ogen.

Lippen

ideaal is een volledig zwarte mond inclusief verhemelte en lippen, met een blauw-zwarte tong. Maar bij blauwe en fawn Chow Chows mag wat minder gepigmenteerd tandvlees te zien zijn en bij crème en witte Chows mag deze verdunning nog meer uitgesproken zijn.

Kaken/Gebit

tanden sterk en op een lijn, kaken sterk met een perfect, regelmatig en compleet schaargebit, dat wil zeggen dat de boventanden net over de ondertanden sluiten en recht in de kaak staan.

Ogen

donker, ovaal, middelmatig van formaat, en schoon. Een oog in een harmoniërende kleur is toegestaan bij de blauwe en de fawn Chow Chows. Een schoon oog, vrij van entropion, mag nooit alleen vanwege het formaat worden achtergesteld.

Oren

klein, dik, aan de bovenkant iets afgerond, stijf gedragen en wijd uiteen, maar
wel schuin boven het oog staand en iets naar elkaar toewijzend, resulterend in de fronsende uitdrukking die zo kenmerkend is voor het ras. De frons (scowl) mag nooit bereikt worden door losse gerimpelde hoofdhuid.

Hals

Sterk, vol, niet kort, goed op de schouders geplaatst en licht gebogen. Van voldoende lengte om het hoofd trots boven de toplijn te dragen.

Small, round, cat-like, standing well up on toes.


Gait / Movement

Relatively short striding, hind feet not lifted high, appearing to skim the ground, resulting in pendulum like action when seen in profile. Its distinctive short-striding gait allows it to move freely, never lumbering and with excellent endurance. Forelegs and hindlegs moving parallel to each other and straight forward. Dogs should always be able to move freely and soundly without any sign of distress.


Coat

Qualité du poil

Either rough or smooth. :

  • Rough: Profuse, abundant, dense, straight and stand-off but not excessive in length. Outer coat coarse, with soft woolly undercoat. Especially thick round neck forming mane or ruff and with good culottes or breechings on back of thighs.

  • Smooth: Coat short, dense, straight, upstanding, not flat, plush-like in texture. Any artificial shortening of the coat which alters the natural outline or expression should be penalised, with the exception of feet which may be tidied.

Colour

Whole coloured black, red, blue, fawn, cream or white, frequently shaded but not in patches or parti-coloured (underpart of tail and back of thighs frequently of a lighter colour).


Size

Height at the withers:

  • Males : 48 – 56 cms
  • Females : 46 – 51 cms


Faults

Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog.


Disqualifiying faults

  • Aggressive or overly shy.
  • Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities shall be disqualified.


N.B.:

  • Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
  • Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical conformation should be used for breeding.
